The Prayagraj Kumbh Mela is the most significant of all Kumbh Melas due to the confluence of three sacred rivers, and thus believed to be a spiritually potent spot ! The festival period of Kumbh is marked by a ritual dip in the waters of the sacred and holy rivers, but it is also a celebration of community commerce with numerous fairs, education, rituals, religious ceremonies and discourses by saints, mass gatherings of monks, and entertainment throughout the event.
The Kumbh signifies a cyclical event taking place approximately every three years at the 4 Tirtha sites on the river banks of the Triveni Sangam of Ganga,Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati confluence at Prayag Raj , Ganga at Haridwar, Shipra at Ujjain, and Godavari at Nasik in the Indian Subcontinent.
It Is believed that the nectar of immortality or the Elixir of eternal life (Amrit) was spilled at the time of Samudra Manthan – a significant event of the churning of the Cosmic Milky Ocean , at the above 4 sites, which have served as the four locations of the Kumbh Mela since times immemorial.
The sadhaks and sadhu’s believe that bathing in these rivers is a means to prāyaścitta (atonement, penance, restorative action) for past mistakes, and that it cleanses them of their sins.
